Katarina started skating at age five. old. It was not long before her talents became apparent, and at the age of Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered an institution specifically designed for children with sporting talents. This was where she met her coach Jutta Muller. Witt was able to make her mark in the year 1982 when she placed second in her first World Championships at Copenhagen. From that moment on the elegance and grace of her skating caught everyone's attention. Her dominance began in this particular sport. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) took home the women's Figure Skating gold medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. Then, four years after that she was able to take home an even tighter race. Even though she fell short in the free-skating contest, gold was awarded for her performances on the mandatory figures, as well as on the program in short form. Witt was the only woman since Sonja Haenie who was the winner of a second time in figure skating. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career as an actor. While she did not win a single medal, she was awed by fans even with finishing seventh. Witt was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in the year 1995.
